5 Tips for Staying Healthy on the Road
Ah, December. I love this time of year for so many reasons. The magic of the holidays. The approach of a new year. Quality time with close friends and loved ones. And yet… that last month never fails to spring up on me. It catches me by surprise every time.
Over the last couple of years, I have made a concerted effort to slow down in December (despite it being the beginning of a very busy season for me at work). I try to get all of my Christmas shopping done by Black Friday, and make sure I keep on top of housework (and those tiny, seemingly insignificant tasks that always tend to pile up a bit more than we intend). Being cognizant of all of this helps me to focus on capturing the joy in each day ahead and helps me remember what is truly important when all is said and done – my health and happiness.
It can be difficult during the holidays (or any other busy, hectic time of your life) to maintain healthy habits and prioritize your self care. For that reason, I wanted to share some effortless tips that have helped me stay healthy on the road.
- Something is better than nothing. 5 minutes of yoga, a quick 10 minute HIIT session. Remember – done is better than perfect! And your body will thank you for it.
- Take advantage of what is available to you. Great hiking, a pool, scenic walks – whatever. Get moving while you are traveling, and take in the sights while you are at it. Some of my favorite solo travel memories came from me simply getting off my behind and walking (or running) around. I love getting acquainted with the area on foot – it seems so much more special that way.
- Stock pile healthy snack options. Before you head out the door, make sure you grab a small bag of almonds, a banana or apple. Choose healthy options that can be taken with you wherever you go. When I get hungry, I get hangry – I think my coworkers can vouch for me when I say having healthy snacks on hand makes for a more pleasant experience (for all of us).
- Take advantage of the ever-expanding availability of fruits and veggies. At the airport, gas station – healthy to-go food options are finally becoming more accessible wherever you go. It can be very easy to grab a candy bar or fast food while traveling – but it can be just as easy to choose the healthier option, too.
- Carry a water bottle with you. When I forget my water bottle, I forget to hydrate. By forcing myself to carry around a water bottle wherever I go, I stay hydrated (without hardly even noticing)!
